Things That Make Me Happy/Things That Make Me Sad

The winner of the Book Pimp Giveaway is listed below (#9). Congratulations! Please email your address and which one of the four books (Venus Envy, Surviving Demon Island, The Rest Falls Away, and Magic or Madness) that you would like me to send you.

To the rest, thanks for entering, and we’ll do this again next week!

Things that Make Me Happy:
1. The totally awesome surprise I mailed to Gena Showalter that she may tell you about at her leisure.
2. The kick ass interior design of Under the Rose, and the fact that I’ve seen said kick ass interior design, which means that I saw my book looking like a book, and that’s always happy-making.
3. Speaking of happy-making, I just found out that Scott Westerfeld, New York Times Bestseller List regular, Aurealis nominee, Norton preliminary balloteer, and my long-time professional crush, is writing a follow-up to the Uglies trilogy, called EXTRAS, which will be out in the fall. I get all bubbly just thinking about it.
4. Justine Larbalestier is also on the prelim Norton ballot.
5. Susan Adrian has a new excerpt of her book up. Go read it.
6. Dona Sarkar-Mishra just announced her first book sale for How to Salsa in a Sari. Go congratulate her!
7. Marianne Mancusi just posted the cover and blurb of her new romance/sci-fi/adventure, Moongazer, on her blog.
8. I finished writing a synopsis yesterday and I’m very proud of it.
9. The winner of the Book Pimp Giveaway and his/her choice of the four books pictured on the giveaway post is… SARA (EATRAWFISH)

Things That Make Me Sad:
1. I’m having some sort of tooth pain.
2. Reading up on the type of pain it is on the internet in tandem with my dental history makes me suspect I may need a root canal.
3. Which is not cheap.
4. And I don’t have dental insurance.
5. And it’s so aggravating, because I had great dental insurance at my old job and did not need to go to a dentist, but less than a month after quitting said old job with the great dental insurance, I had a dental incident. (The only thing that even slightly mollifies my frustration of this situation is that even if I had sprung for the unreasonably expensive independent dental insurance, my hypothetical future root canal would not be covered, since there was an 18 month blackout window. Which means if you, like me, chipped a tooth, and then 6 months later you are experiencing a pain that indicates the need for a root canal, then you are up shit creek as far as coverage goes.)
6. Man, I hope this isn’t even worse than I think it is.
7. Did I mention how I don’t actually have a dentist here? Now taking recommendations. Feel free to email.

  • Diana – maybe call your dentist and ask for an antibiotic if you can take them. I had some major tooth pain in one of my molars, took the antibioltic and after a few days never had the pain again.

He said it was a quick fix and that eventually I’d probably need a root canal, but it’s been at least 2 years since then, and I’m faithful about my 6 mos – not a blip even on the x-rays.

Way cheaper and worth a shot!

  • And sorry – tooth pain is miserable.

  • I even have dental insurance and still haven’t been to a dentist. Seriously – haven’t seen a dentist for 10 years. Yowzers. That should tell you how good at denial I am!

sigh… guess I’ll go look up dentists in my area now…

  • I’ve never heard that, Jill. Thanks for the info.

I hope you find a qualified and inexpensive dentist, Diana. :)

  • Dental stuff gives me the heebie-jeebies. I have the most sensitive teeth ever.

And I don’t have dental insurance either. We have just about every other insurance on the planet, but not that.

    Hugs.

  • Things that make me happy…making #5 on your happy list. WOW! Thanks! :)

Sorry to hear about the general tooth yuckiness. We had a “family” dentist visit yesterday–amazing how we actually GO now that we have a kid–but it was fairly painless. I’m hoping for a good outcome for you…

  • I’m just going to bypass all the bad news–no point in dwelling on any of that–and say that your happy list is such a sweet thing to read first thing in the morning! Congratulations to everyone on that list, including you, Diana. Way to go finishing your synopsis! And liking it, to boot!

  • Congratulations, Sara!

  • Congrats Sara!

  • Sorry you’re hurting. Go get some of that baby anbasol and numb your whole mouth up. Watch out for drool on the keyboard though!

    xo,
    Steph

  • Congrats Sara!! (tee hee)

And, Diana, sorry to hear about the tooth. They used to use clove oil (or even the clove itself with the pointy parts off) to help with pain.

Speaking as one who is HUGE on self-diagnosis, I still suggest you hie yourself to a dentist because even if it is a root canal you can’t do it yourself (and thank goodness!). Most dentists that I’ve been to take payments.

Do make sure it *is* a good dentist, though. We had a bad one for a while (courtesy of a dental plan) and are now redoing mo$t everything they did. :(

  • Diana,

Before spending any money…try super-flossing…really getting that area more than usual. Could be that something got lodged under the gum and is irritating it, which can make it feel like something worse than it is. I’m speaking from experience, and it might just calm down completely in a day or so if that’s the case. Worth a shot anyway.

Good luck. I hope you don’t need a root canal.

    Pam

  • Congrats, Sara!!

  • Marianne Mancusi

    Yay! I’m #7. :) Thanks!!

I’m sorry your tooth hurts. That sucks!!!

  • Jessica Burkhart

So sorry to hear about the tooth pain. If you want an over the counter painkiller- use Aleve instead of Tylenol. That’s what a dentist told me once. Also, try swishing green tea in your mouth. That’s highly antibacterial and may help with the pain. It worked for me.

  • Unfortunately I’ve had many root canals (and lots of other lovely dental adventures). My advice — if you do need a root canal, get a referral to someone who specializes in root canals, don’t have it done by a general dentist. I’ve done it both ways, and the dental surgeons who do only root canals are much quicker, painless, and all in all less unpleaseant an experience.

So sorry you are in pain — hope it’s better soon. Get treatment right away — if it’s still hurting, you may not need a root canal — it’s when the pain stops that you’re really in trouble be/c that means the nerve is dead. Not that I ever delayed getting dental treatment way too long . . . uhum.

  • Sorry, don’t know why my comment double posted.

  • From a health insurance expert (me): get married. Go do a civil ceremony or something and then you can go on SB’s insurance.

  • hyOooh! I won! Crazy! Thanks so much! I’m so excited. I’ll e-mail you the info when I have a chance.

On the subject of root canals — I’ve done that! In my case the pain in my tooth was SO Excrutiatingly Bad that the root canal itself was almost A Joy. I was still under my parents insurance so I did not have that added financial pain.

  • I, for one, am sad and horribly confused. And I believe that is because I misunderstood the rules.

I thought there would be multiple winners, 1 for each book, possibly due to the fact that I am a skim reader and missed a key detail.

Now, in my plan, I was to be the third winner out of four as I understood it.

So, while some may be thinking I lost, I actually only miscalculated.

And my tooth story is horrible. It starts with me beating up my older brother waiting for the bus, when I was in 6th grade.

and it ends with the fact that I still need an implant. And that is about 3K-4K over the course of a year with 6 months of a ‘flipper’. And my REALLY good insurance won’t cover implants.

  • oh, bummer! i had a root canal several years ago. no fun at all. Upside is that now having a cavity filled is nothing. I wish you lived out in the SF area – I have the best dentist in the world.

But super cool on seeing your book looking like a book. That’s always very cool.

  • I can’t wait to share the surprise! And I owe it all to one special lady who :)

    (sorry about the tooth!)
